Library type possibilities?

I have been looking on the website for a while now to see if Inkscape has the capabilities of saving some of the elements that are in my drawings for further use, such as an user library. If I have overlooked it, please point me in the right direction. This program appears to have a lot going for it. I am used to xcircuit on a linux platform, but I am having problems with it on my mac and am looking for a somewhat similar program to run on OS X to do my drawings with. The library type feature is quite important to me. Any help would be appreciated.
